Choosing  Lawn Services

What is thatch?
A layer of excess organic plant matter that spreads around your blades of grass
cutting off water, air and other nutrients.

Greener Lawn
If your goal is to have a greener lawn than the one across the street. Start your lawn off right by spreading fertilizer.  Regular fertilizing treatments will increase your odds of having that greener lawn. You may try a mixture that's super high in nitrogen (at least 30 to 50 percent). See our suppliers or ask your lawn care professional.

Grass Seed Info

Seed mixtures combine several kinds of grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass in various proportions. Their respective weaknesses offset each other to assure a green lawn all season. Blends, on the other hand, combine several varieties of the same kind of grass, such as three types of Kentucky bluegrass, to provide a uniform look. Nurseries, garden centers, and suppliers carry formulations appropriate for your region.

Keys to success in growing a lawn from seed are proper timing, good preparation, and aftercare. Fall is a great time to sow grass seed giving the grass time to extend its roots deeply into the soil so it can endure the heat of summer.

Our suppliers and lawn care professionals could answer any questions you may have about the care, grass types and regional conditions. Many suppliers on-line are equipped to handle your questions and purchases. Providers often ship to your location directly. Check out the suppliers in your region.

Pruning
Spring time could be a bad time, trees may become weakened by pruning too early. Pruning in late summer will prevent weakening trees or branches Structure changes and form is best in the fall when the leaves have fallen and the branches can be seen clearly for cutting.

Adding Lime to your Lawn
Never fertilize and lime a lawn at the same time. The combination produces ammonia gas, releasing fertilizer's valuable nitrogen.
Soil in some regions has more acid than grass prefers. If your lawn is in such an area, spread granular limestone on the lawn, which takes effect later in about 3 - 6 months. Lime is alkaline, so it neutralizes excess acid and improving the soil quality.

Aeration:
Let your lawn breath. Give the soil some air before putting down your fall fertilizer and seeding. Aerating is the removal of small plugs of soil from your yard. This helps break up compacted soil and mulch.
If you are not sure if your lawn needs aerating ask a lawn care professional.
Things to think about this Summer:
Vacations can be fun and relaxing. Start thinking now about your vacation time.  Don't forget the lawn while your away. It may need mowing before you're back from vacation, so make arrangements to have it done. If you do your own lawn remember that an unkept lawn is one of the first signs you are away, so have a plan for mowing in your absence.
